Exceptional Expressions for Everyday Events

Image
E4 is a series of 32 flexible vocabulary development lessons each focusing on an everyday concept and brainstorming other words that describe the concept. Each activity can be used for a few minutes a day over the course of a week. The heart of each E4 vocabulary lesson is the word web, describing in detail various meanings of each word and showing other words with similar meanings, plus idioms, common phrases and a unique E4 feature called the Spanish Connection that shows English-Spanish cognates relating to each word. Each lesson also includes a morphology web that summarizes word changes such as inflected endings, prefixes, suffixes and compound words. We provide two versions of the webs for each lesson, one filled-in and one with blank boxes. These can be projected using an interactive whiteboard or as overheads (they’re even simple enough to redraw on a blackboard), making possible a variety of flexible usage scenarios. EXAM SPEAKING TIPS - What to say when you don't know what to say?

Image
One way to pass your speaking part in exams is to familiarize yourself with natural connectors in speech. These differ from those in writing and are used in conversations to fill in awkward gaps, to link ideas to earlier statements and questions, and keep the conversation flowing.  When asked for your opinion, natural fillers include sounds of hesitation, expressions of surprise at the question, or comments that are later followed by an answer. • I can’t tell you that with certainty, but....  • That’s a tough/interesting/good/tricky question. • Let's see.... • Oh, let me think about that for a moment. • To be honest.... • Offhand, I’d say… • In a way ... • So to speak ... • Without any doubt... • Wow, I really have no idea what to say.  • It's a tough question, let me think... • As far as I’m concerned… • I've never been asked that before. Let me think... • I've never thought about that, actually.  • It was just on the tip of my tongue... • Oh, it has slipped my mind...

5 Things NOT to Do When Speaking English!

Image
1. Don’t Be too Ashamed to Speak By believing that you can’t speak English you close your mind to trying, and never give yourself the opportunity to improve. There is only one way to learn how to speak English, and that is to open your mouth and speak English! The only way you will ever get better at speaking is by speaking, and speaking a lot! 22. Don’t Be Afraid of Making Mistakes This may sound funny, but you should try making as many mistakes as possible. If you are making mistakes that means you are actually speaking English and improving. Of course, you shouldn’t intentionally make them, and you should try to be aware of your mistakes so you can learn from them and improve your skills. 33. Don’t get frustrated with yourself Learning English will come with a certain amount of frustration. At some point, you will come to a stage where you won’t be able to fully express yourself like you would be able to in your native language, and there will be times when you won’t be able to find...
