Essentials for Successful English Language Teaching

Image
Education is meant to open magical doors to students, offer exciting, fulfilling careers for teachers, and help create a world in which people work together for the common good. The possibilities are great. Students have so much to learn and so many ways to learn it. Similarly, we teachers have so much to learn about what we teach and the fascinatingly complex paths to facilitating student learning. Essentials for Successful English Language Teaching is about how we teach second language (mostly English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL)) and how our second language students learn. “There’s nothing as practical as a good theory” (Kurt Lewin, 1951, p. 169) probably best sums up how we arranged the contents of this book (see also Chapter 10) as we think it is a practical approach to teaching second language yet, all the activities are backed up solidly with clearly explained theories about where they came from. The Multiple Intelligences of Reading and Writing: Making the Words Come Alive 1st Edition

Image
We normally think of reading and writing as skills that are a part of linguistic intelligence. In The Multiple Intelligences of Reading and Writing: Making the Words Come Alive, Thomas Armstrong shows how involving the other seven intelligences-logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic-will help students acquire reading and writing skills, especially those students who are not particularly strong in linguistic intelligence. The Multiple Intelligences of Reading and Writing appeals to all educators who work with reading and writing skills, from the preschool teacher leading the class in phonemic awareness activities to the post-graduate professor helping students examine kinesthetic imagery in Shakespeare's plays. The book combines Howard Gardner's MI theory and recent brain research on reading and writing with historical, anthropological, biographical, and psychological perspectives on literacy. Armstrong pulls th...

The Practical Guide to Primary Classroom Management

Image
The book is easy to read and written in an accessible style.  I liked the undertone of humour throughout.  There were lots of ‘real life’ examples and vignettes highlighting different ways of dealing with different situations and what the different consequences of each might be.    Remembering back to my (now long ago!) days as a trainee teacher and NQT, I felt that reading this book then would have reassured me that all teachers have good and bad days and face daily challenges in their classrooms and would have given me lots of ideas and strategies to practise and try out. How do you learn English?

Image
Perfect English communication involves many small rules that you need to remember in order to communicate in English perfectly.   Developing a perfect understanding of the language along with effortless communication takes time and effort! Things you can do to improve your English: 💫 Surround yourself in English. Put yourself in an all English speaking environment where you can learn passively. 💫 Practise the 4 core skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. They all need to be worked on for you to improve. 💫 Do a lesson at least once a day. 💫 You will find words easier to remember if you try to remember an example sentence using that word rather the word on its own. 💫 Review! Make sure that you take the time to review things you have studied in the past. 💫 When you learn a new word, think of all its other forms: Beautiful (adjective),beauty (noun), beautifully (adverb).

DO YOU KNOW OTHER USES OF: ODD?

Image
Hi my friends 😊 Loads of students have asked me what the following mean: ❗When I'm out clubbing, I do ask the odd girl for her phone number! ❗Yeah, I like to go to the odd pub!  We know ODD can mean: weird/strange or numbers like: 1,3,5,7 etc, or you can wear odd socks (not the same ones), a person can seem odd (out of character). What are the odds of people understanding this post? (the chances) but...  ...THE ODD...(happening or occurring infrequently and irregularly; occasionally) 👉🏻 She does the odd bit of cleaning around the house but nothing major (Not often therefore does little) 👉🏻 You get the odd person who's rude to you but they're generally quite helpful (It happens sometimes but not often) 👉🏻 I go swimming on the odd weekend if I feel like it. (On some weekends but not many of them) 👉🏻 I like to have the odd beer when I'm out with friends. (So i don't drink much because I rarely drink)

How to Teach Listening in the ESL Classroom: 15 Valuable Activities That Create Solid Skills

Image
3 Ways to Increase Listening Skills and Confidence First of all, here are three basic principles. 1. Limit the use of translation. Your students need to be able to understand and respond without having to translate in their heads all the time, especially when they are listening rather than reading. At first it might seem like the easy, comfortable way to learn a language, but if it develops into a habit then they will never be able to speak English fluently. Translation is a habit that needs to be limited because… Students tend to start to panic when they find they don’t know every word. Using those electronic translators especially can give warped ideas of meaning. This doesn’t mean that you never let them translate. Sometimes having an equivalent from their first language is the only way to move them forward, but quickly move on and don’t allow them to keep returning to it. In general, there are better ways to handle running into new vocabulary while listening. When students hear a n...
